75% of drivers lack confidence on European roads

Almost three-quarters of drivers lack confidence when driving abroad, according to a survey of AA members.

Nearly 15,000 drivers took part in the research which comes ahead of two major sporting events which are taking place in Europe this summer.

The results have been released ahead of the UEFA European Championships which start this month prior to the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in Paris.

It’s expected that many UK fans will be heading to the continent to show their support for the country’s sportspeople.

The survey showed less than a third of drivers feel confident about driving in Europe which is a drop of 20% from just six years ago.

Less than 20% of people said they enjoyed driving on the Continent (down from just over 40% some six years ago).

A quarter of respondents said that they found roads in Europe to be in better condition than those in the UK. Almost a third of respondents said that they avoid driving abroad altogether.

Confidence levels slightly improve in hire cars

The results suggest that people feel their confidence levels slightly improve when using a hire car compared to taking their own vehicle overseas. Researchers say the results may reflect the nature of using a left hand drive car when hiring a vehicle.

The survey also showed that men claimed to be more confident than the opposite sex when it came to driving abroad.

Just over 80% of people surveyed said it was important to check local road rules to avoid the risk of fines or an accident.

This figure is higher in younger drivers and decreases through the ages. These figures have dropped from almost 100% ten years ago.
