A warm welcome to help to escape from ‘Blue Monday’

Devon charity opens doors for coffee and chat

The end of January can be seen as a ‘low point’ as the long wintery nights continue and the pressure of heating costs remain as a source of concern for many people. The media often highlight ‘Blue Monday’ as a tricky time.

It’s why Westbank Community Health and Care is marking Warm Welcome Week with an upgraded warm space for people in and around the Exminster area.

Organisers say it makes a big difference for local residents seeking a welcoming, heated place during the daytime. A place where they can share a cuppa and have a chat.

The aim is to help combat the winter blues and ease cost-of-living pressures for those who are struggling to heat their home.

The newly upgraded space within the charity’s Healthy Living Centre at Exminster aims to ease the sense of isolation by providing a safe space for people to meet.

‘We want everyone to know that there’s a warm welcome for them here at Westbank,’ says Katie Elliott, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Westbank.

‘As Devon’s foremost health and wellbeing charity we are keenly aware of the ongoing pressures facing people in our community, particularly during the winter months when things can seem particularly bleak.’

Community hub with upgraded facilities

‘That’s why our warm space Warmwell is located in our new Community Hub at Westbank with upgraded facilities including a new kitchen corner.’

‘Visitors to Warmwell can help themselves to a warm drink and store cupboard ingredients from the Community Larder. We also provide advice on how to stay warm at home and leaflets about other relevant organisations who can offer support.’

‘Whether you just want a warm space to hang out in during the day or are seeking social connection, you’ll find it here at Westbank.’

Warmwell at Farm House Rise in Exminster is open to all on Monday 10am to 8pm and Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and is free to use. Donations are welcome.

The Warm Welcome Campaign highlights the warm spaces where everyone can find a place of belonging and reconnection near their home.

The campaign aims to create a more deeply connected society where we all have free access to welcoming community spaces.
