Cornwall Air Ambulance event raising funds for second helicopter

Are you ready for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Alternative Triathlon? The team today announced its swim, paddle board and running challenge is back for 2024. The event is kindly sponsored by Ann’s Cottage.

The fundraising event will take place at Siblyback Lake in Liskeard, with more than 100 participants lined up to take on a 750m lake swim. They will then paddle for 1.5km before running 5km around the lake.

Organisers say that the event, on Sunday 28th April, is suitable for all skill levels from novice to seasoned triathlete. They add that you can enter either as an individual or as a team of three (taking on one stage each).

Participants will be swimming 750 metres at this year’s event being held at Siblyback Lake.

Last year saw the team engage in more than 1160 rescue flights which was a 10% rise in mission numbers when compared to 2022. That’s an average of more than three flights every day.

More than 500 of these incidents were trauma-related and 297 were to help people who had suffered medical emergencies. The crew also attended 306 cardiac arrests.

Throughout the year, the critical care team delivered a total of 19 blood transfusions at the scene of an incident and carried out 19 inter-hospital transfers.

All the money raised from the Siblyback Lake triathlon will go towards helping to secure a second AW169 helicopter for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It’s all part of the charity’s #Heli2 appeal.

Participants at this year’s triathlon will paddle for 1.5km before running 5km around the lake.

‘Following the huge success of last year’s event we are delighted to bring back our Alternative Triathlon to the stunning location of Siblyback Lake,’ says Rob Foster, Fundraising Officer for Events and Challenges.

‘The day is set to be filled with energy, entertainment, and a great atmosphere. So come along and join us, grab some mates if you want to, and challenge yourself. You’ll even get some goodies to take away with you.’

‘We hope you’ll be inspired to support us in the lead up to the event, and please know that all your fundraising efforts will help us to raise the vital funds needed to purchase a second aircraft, and ultimately save even more lives.’

The charity is launching a number of initiatives to raise funds for the helicopter, including placing the names of supporters on its aircraft.
