Law firm highlights courage of people facing adversity
The ‘Everyday Bravery’ campaign is today gaining momentum following its recent launch at the Plymouth Arts Cinema.
The event saw members of the legal and business community witness incredible stories of courage – all documented by a top film maker.
Organisers at The Family Law Company are now seeking more stories of everyday bravery, with nominees having the chance of enjoying a luxury stay at award-winning Bovey Castle Hotel & Spa on Dartmoor.
Over the past few years, the company has developed a set of internal core values based on the concept of being brave.
The campaign has now gone one step further with the launch providing attendees the chance to see a series of short films highlighting the everyday bravery of individuals who have shown courage in the face of a variety of life challenges.
The screening included interviews with eight local people who shared their experiences which ranged from surviving domestic abuse, overcoming language barriers and living with extreme post-natal depression.
One interviewee told of how they found the courage to pursue a successful career after having a stroke – at the age of just 28.

A strong message of courage – and hope
Filmed sensitively by David Kilkelly, each story carries a positive message showing how being courageous has helped the person to get through.
‘For over 30 years now, The Family Law Company has stood beside those making brave decisions in their lives. We’ve been inspired by all kinds of bravery from so many people, which is why we decided to make it our core value,’ explains Kerry England, Business Development Director.
‘If you listen closely enough lots of people have a story about having to find their courage at different times in their lives – myself included – but it often goes unnoticed.’
‘So we want to celebrate more examples of this type of bravery. Not the ‘superhero’ type of bravery, but bravery that is part of everyday life.’
The company is asking for nominations from members of the public who know someone who fits this description of everyday bravery.
Every nomination will be considered by an independent panel which will choose the story that stands out most to them – alongside two runners up.

‘The top nominee will enjoy an exceptional two-night stay at Bovey Castle, together with a choice of extras, perhaps a session at the hotel’s Elan Spa & Studio, a round on the hotel’s 18-hole Championship golf course or a guided Dartmoor tour, making this a really special experience, a true celebration of their bravery,’ says Kerry.
Something which takes courage
‘We will also be choosing two further nominees, who will receive beautiful hampers from Bespoke and Local, crammed with lovely locally sourced treats to spoil themselves with.’
‘Remember, this doesn’t have to be a spectacular example of bravery but simply something that has taken courage.’
Panel members include: Annette Stone from accountancy and business consultancy Azets, Mike Bee from Big Box MediaRachel Buckley, Joint-MD at The Family Law Company, Helen Hoskin of Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and the General Manager of Bovey Castle, Dean Gunston, who has offered the main prize. Nominations close on 31 January, 2025.
