Fans of historical re-enactments are heading to Pendennis Castle this week to watch ‘Lady Isabella Holland’ taking on the competition at The Knights’ Tournament.

It’s the first time that a woman is taking part in the event which is expected to draw in spectators from inside and outside of Cornwall. The role is being played by English Heritage’s historical reenactor Liz.

The title of Knight in the medieval period was seen as a show of honour and respect. In practice, it was never bestowed upon women. That said, there were some notable female warriors in that time.

The character of ‘Lady Isabella’ will be tested against three other worthy opponents in one-to-one and group combat. The tournament runs until Thursday 8th August.

Each will be put to the test in their battle strength and skills, including sword-fighting and archery. Their trusty squires will be on hand to help them prepare for each round.

Visitors will be able to meet her and watch all the knights get donned up in their armour ready to fight. A living history encampment will set up in the castle grounds for tournament with medieval music and fire-breathing Jester.

‘Each event will be an amazing display of courage and chivalry,’ says Ella Harrison, Events Manager at English Heritage.

‘Visitors and families especially love cheering on their favourite knights and talking to our reenactors about their kit, weaponry, and tactics.’

‘We’re definitely expecting huge support for our female knight this year which will be fun. One of the biggest fans of jousting was, of course, Henry VIII, who ordered the creation of Pendennis Castle back in the 1500s.’

The Knights’ Tournament is taking place between Tuesday 6 August through to Thursday 8 August. It starts at 1000 and finishes at 1700.

It’s being held at Pendennis Castle in Falmouth (TR11 4LP) with admission to the event being additional to the standard admission ticket price. There is an extra cost for members.

English Heritage’s Legendary Joust and Knights’ Tournament will each be returning twice to Pendennis Castle this summer.

Perched on the headland looking out to the beautiful town of Falmouth and picturesque village of St Mawes, the grounds of the castle will be transformed for these special events.
