Inaugural fundraising ‘Big Sing’

Who doesn’t love a good toe tapping approach to Christmas? Well, the lucky audience at St David’s Church in Exeter were in for a real treat as they recently enjoyed the vocal ranges of more than 200 singers from Rock Choir East Devon.

The choir filled the venue with music and a healthy dollop of festive cheer for its’ inaugural fundraising ‘Big Sing’. Members from the Broadclyst, Exeter, Exmouth and Honiton groups joined forces to perform 14 uplifting songs from their recent repertoire.

The setlist spanned decades and genres, featuring Erasure’s A Little Respect, Earth, Wind & Fire’s September, Blondie’s Call Me.

And there was a true array of seasonal classics, including: Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone and Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.

The feel-good afternoon wasn’t just about the music. Thanks to a raffle, home-baked cakes, coffees and generous donations, the choir raised more than £1,000 for local CIC Inclusive Exeter.

The organisation works to support individuals and groups from ethnically diverse communities and aims to promote a sense of connection, understanding and positive representation across the city.

‘At the heart of it, the aims of Inclusive Exeter mirror our own, as Rock Choir is open to all,’ explains Carey Camel, Rock Choir East Devon Leader.

‘A huge thank you to all my choir members who came along, donated raffle prizes and supported what I hope will become an annual event. I know everyone enjoyed the chance to sing together – it was a really uplifting afternoon.’

It’s been a busy month for Rock Choir East Devon as they’ve been performing for the switching on of Uffculme Christmas Lights and have been providing carols at Killerton Chapel.

They also took part in a joint concert with Tiverton Town Band and were singing carols at The Grove in Exnouth.

Rock Choir East Devon will restart rehearsals the week beginning January 13, 2026 – and new members are always welcome. Why not give it a go? There are no auditions and free taster sessions are available for anyone interested in group singing.

Breaktime News recently reported on ShelterBox’s carol concert which saw hundreds of people brave the cold weather as they headed to Truro Cathedral for the annual event.
