Research find rock remains a firm favourite driving genre

The ‘Top Driving Tunes for Dads’ is being revealed ahead of Father’s Day following a survey which found that Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody remains firmly seated on the Dad Rock throne.

‘We argued for a long time about what song should take the top spot,’ says Mark Trimbee, Regtransfers’ CEO. The company decided to celebrate Father’s Day with a survey set to produce the ultimate nostalgia-fuelled driving playlist.

‘Ultimately, Bohemian Rhapsody is a timeless slice of British rock music, adored across generations. We might have to unseat it next year, for the sake of fairness, but for now, we’re more than happy to crown it the number one Dad Rock driving track.’

To find out what Brits enjoy listening to behind the wheel, the team conducted a survey and found that nearly a third of respondents picked rock as their go-to driving genre. Almost half (47%) said that music helps them feel more focused and alert while driving.

The nostalgia-fuelled playlist reflects how both driving music and fatherhood have evolved, with new research showing that rock remains one of Britain’s favourite driving genres.

‘Listening to music while driving can be a fantastic way to add enjoyment to the experience, but as research has shown, it can also be a bit of a minefield,’ says Mark.

‘What’s particularly interesting is that whether music helps or hinders focus behind the wheel depends on a range of factors, and tempo, volume and familiarity all play a part in this.’

‘Feel good soundtrack’

The company points to a study which found fast tempo music can subconsciously encourage drivers to speed or make quicker lane changes.

It adds that slow-tempo tracks can promote calmness but that excessively slow music may have the opposite effect – potentially inducing drowsiness.

The team says research also suggests that familiarity with your chosen playlist can be an important factor for driving as listening to complex, or unfamiliar tracks, can divert attention away from driving tasks.

When it comes to rock music then whether it’s the best music to ‘drive to is up for debate’ says Rick Cadger, a content writer at Regtransfers and one of the main brains behind this year’s playlist.

‘But it’s certainly one of the most entertaining and, as a genre, Dad Rock offers a particularly fun, feel-good soundtrack.’
