English Heritage announce What’s On fun in Cornwall
Three English Heritage sites in Cornwall are ready to welcome families between the 10th and 18th February 2024 for the half-term holidays. St Mawes Castle, Pendennis Castle and Tintagel Castle offer captivating day outs for grown-ups and children alike.
You can even wrap up warm to take the scenic ferry ride from Falmouth and visit both Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle in one day.
The two Tudor gun forts stand facing each other, built to defend the River Fal from attack by sea.
Up on the dramatic North Cornwall coastline, the unmissable Tintagel Castle has a history that is steeped in romantic legend. Here’s where you can soak up some fresh air in three beautiful historic settings:
Pendennis Castle, Falmouth
Get a dose of Tudor and World War history by visiting Pendennis Castle in Falmouth this half-term. The conservation team recently provided a ‘behind the scenes‘ glimpse of the work they undertake at the site.
Strategically situated at on a headland, the fortress built by Henry VIII offers 360-degree panoramas of its surroundings.
There are hidden paths and tunnels down to World War Two defences and observation points to explore, as well an exhibition in the Victorian barracks building.
Refreshments are served in the tearoom and there’s an indoor play area for young children. Dogs can enter the site on leads. Prices from £12.50 for an adult and £32.50 for family.
Tintagel Castle
The spectacular ruins and rugged coastal scenery at Tintagel Castle offer a completely open-air visit to blow off the winter cobwebs. It recently saw a helicopter deliver gravel to the remote site to help in the maintenance of the surrounding pathways.
Most famous for its links to the legendary King Arthur, Tintagel Castle has plenty to see, including the remains of a medieval castle clinging to the cliffs, a dramatic award-wining footbridge, and Gallos, a bronze status of an ancient king.
At low tide there’s also access to the beach and Merlin’s Cave. Traditional Cornish fare is on offer in the tearoom after your walk, and dogs are allowed to join in the fun on a lead. Prices from £16.00 for an adult and £41.50 for family.
St Mawes Castle
Another well-preserved Tudor fortress, St Mawes Castle is perhaps the most elaborately decorated example of its kind. In the heart of the picture-perfect village of St Mawes, the clover-leaf shaped castle sits proudly just above the water.
It boasts landscaped gardens, a collection of historic canons and intricate stone carvings.
Children can enjoy a trail around the castle while the grown-ups digest the castle’s exhibits.
Bear Cornwall run a coffee van in the car park, or you can bring your own food and make use of the picnic benches in the grounds. Prices from £7.50 for an adult and £19.00 for family.
