First time for south west: an exploration of legacy
It was a key moment of twentieth century history. The sinking of Titanic. An event which shocked the world and led to a plethora of books, films and documentaries depicting what happened after she struck an iceberg in April, 1912.
Well, for the first time in the south west, the scale of the story will be unveiled at Exeter’s Westpoint Arena from 15 – 31 October.
Organisers explain it’s a chance to explore the story of the RMS Titanic, from its design and construction, right through to the events which unfurled during the night of 15th April, 1912.
On display will be a variety of rare and internationally significant artefacts from the Titanic’s past, including what is thought to be the largest surviving fragment of the aft Grand Staircase.
There’s also one of only a small number of intact Titanic deckchairs. The exhibition also showcases items belonging to passengers and crew, bringing to life the personal tragedies behind the story.
These unique fragments of history will be set amongst vivid displays and detailed recreations, allowing visitors to step into the past, as well as into the depths of the ocean, where the Titanic now lies.

Local connections to the wreck
What’s more, Exeter has played a part in the story of the Titanic. After the disaster, the Titanic Relief Fund was set up for the families of those who died in the disaster.
For many years after, sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds were raised, with the cheques being issued by Exeter bank.
One of these Exeter relief cheques will be on display, as well as other local connections to the world’s most famous ship.
Visitors who purchase the Expert Pass will also get a unique chance to explore the story of the Titanic’s wreck, with guest lectures from Dik Barton.
He was the first British man to visit the wreck site and has been on 22 dives in his former role of Vice President of Operations at RMS Titanic.
