Venue inspired by historic figure of wartime nurse, Dorothy Holman
Honouring the legacy of one of Exeter’s most beloved historic figures is a central theme for a new restaurant being opened in the city.
Dottie’s is named in tribute to Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Holman whose work as a World War One nurse saw her work in London, Egypt, Paris and Versailles. The importance of her role is reflected in a biography of her life by Lily Neal.
Her voluntary work saw her clock up 20 months of full time service – with part time duties accounting for nearly 900 hours (equivalent to nearly 40 days). She went on to be a central benefactor for Topsham Museum.
The outbreak of World War Two saw Dorothy living in the St Thomas area of Exeter. She was in her early fifties and remained a city resident until her death in 1983.

Fast forward to today and staff at Hotel Indigo Exeter are currently putting the finishing touches to Dottie’s restaurant ahead of its opening on 21st November 2025.
They explain it’ll be a ‘space where guests can pause, indulge, and savour time well spent, all in an atmosphere that feels elegant and effortlessly welcoming.’
‘Dottie’s is more than just a restaurant. It’s a reflection of Exeter’s heart and history,’ says James Gardiner, General Manager at Hotel Indigo Exeter.
‘We wanted to create a place that honours Dorothy Holman’s legacy of care and community, while showcasing the incredible flavours and people that make Devon so special.’

‘Honours Dorothy Holman’s legacy of care and community’
Dottie’s will be opening daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The team explain guests will experience ‘a chef-led journey through local flavours, thoughtful service, and the timeless pleasure of good company.’
They add that the restaurant will celebrate seasonal West Country produce, with ‘each dish designed to showcase the best of Devon’s fields, coastlines and artisan suppliers.’
Guests will also be invited to enjoy Dottie’s Tipple, the restaurant’s signature liqueur in the form of a sweet honeycello.
Breaktime News has previously reported on the hotel being awarded the title of Best Luxury Spa in the Best of British Getaway Awards.
