‘It would mean so much to all of us if you’d come to see Oklahoma!’
It’s the ultimate love story with memorable moments which are guaranteed to lift your heart with joy. This is the musical which features music loved by all generations with an array of notable songs, from Oh, what a beautiful mornin’ through to Kansas City.
The plot is centred around a developing romance between Curly and Laurey. One is the confident cowboy while his love focus (Laurey) is a feisty farmer who refuses to put up with any nonsense – from anyone!
The past few weeks has seen cast member Craig Lovett compile a number of interviews with the production team at Duncan Little Theatre (you can watch them on the DLT Facebook page).
‘My interpretation of Ado Annie is that her humour comes from a place of being very genuine and honest and wholehearted in a way that makes her very entertaining,’ says Brenna Lovett Taylor who plays Ado Annie Carnes.
‘Being able to connect with an audience through humour is one of the most rewarding parts of performing for me.’
‘I performed in my first of many DLT shows thirteen years ago and one of my favourite things is being able to share the stage with my family.’
‘This show continues that tradition with my sister, Katie, on stage as a dancer, my sister, Andrea, as props’ co-ordinator and my Dad getting to play my Dad – and that just makes the show so much more special.’
‘This cast and crew have put in so much time and effort and skill into this show and it would mean so much to all of us if you’d come to see Oklahoma!’
‘Arts are important for the community of Duncan’
The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is set at a time when Oklahoma is emerging as a brand new state. And so we see the lines of love become intertwined with the start of Oklahoma’s proud history.
And that leads us to today as the finishing touches are being put to the production which is being staged at Duncan’s Simmons Centre.
‘If I had to describe Curly in three words, I’d say his funny, laid back and charismatic,’ explains Reavis David Hammond who plays Curly McClain. ‘Three other words come to mind, he can be ‘full of it’ too!’
‘At the beginning of the show he has everything that a man could want, he thinks, but at the end of the show he gives it all up and sells everything he’s got for Laurie. I think that’s a special lesson to be learned.’
‘I think arts are important for the community of Duncan because I think it’s important to be plugged in and give back to your community somehow.’
‘And Duncan Little Theatre is a great avenue to be able to do that. It’s fun and you get to meet a lot of good people.’
‘There’s a lot of hard work, it’s not always fun and games, there’s lots of long nights but it’s always worth it and you get to enjoy performing with your friends.’
