Some fantastic half term memories are guaranteed to be made for families heading to English Heritage’s Pendennis Castle between the 28th and 30th May.

The Falmouth landmark is playing host to history’s most famous pirates during the half term holiday.

The Tudor fortress is the backdrop for a nautical adventure with spectators and actors being surrounded by stunning scenary.

‘With its amazing sea views, I can’t think of a better setting than Pendennis Castle for our Pirates! Event,’ says Ella Harrison, Events Manager at English Heritage.

‘We’re excited for it to return to Falmouth for May half-term. Join us to find out whether these 18th century pirates were the swash-buckling heroes or dastardly foes of Cornish history.’

Visitors will be able to wander through an atmospheric encampment on site, with hands on demonstrations and the sounds of sea shanties to enjoy.

They can also listen to tales from the high seas before watching the pirates fight it out at close quarters – just watch out for the sounds of gunfire!

Tickets for the ‘Pirates!’ event can be booked in advance for a 15% discount. English Heritage members also pay a small addition cost for the event.

A history which stretches back to Henry VIII

Perched on a headland overlooking the pretty maritime town of Falmouth, Pendennis Castle has a history that stretches back to the rule of Henry VIII.

It was built to defend England against attack from the sea. And, along with nearby St Mawes Castle, it later played an important part in the World Wars.

Visitors today can find out more about the site’s 20th century history by looking at the concealed Battery Observation Post and exhibition in the Barracks Building. There’s also an indoor soft play area for children and a cosy tearoom where you can enjoy a Cornish pasty and cream tea.

Pirates! At Pendennis Castle (TR11 4LP) is happening between Tuesday 28th May and Thursday 30th May 2024 (1000 – 1700).
